Levelling clips are useful installation tools. They help neighbouring tiles stay aligned while the adhesive cures and can reduce the visible step between tile edges. They are often misunderstood as a solution for an uneven wall or screed.
They are not.
The substrate comes first
Large-format porcelain follows the shape of the surface beneath it. If the wall has hollows, ridges or changes of plane, the installer cannot simply use clips to pull the whole installation flat. The clips connect adjacent tiles; they do not straighten the wall behind them.
Trying to correct a badly prepared surface with excessive adhesive creates a different set of problems. Bed thickness, curing behaviour, coverage and final alignment may no longer match the intended system.
Why big tiles expose small errors
A small tile can bridge a limited imperfection over a short distance. A large tile spans much farther, so a gradual hollow or high point becomes more visible. Light moving across a polished or lappato surface can make that change obvious even when it was difficult to see on the bare wall.
This is one reason large-format bathrooms need a preparation stage that is treated as part of the finished design, not as hidden housekeeping.
The clips still have a role
Once the substrate is suitably prepared, clips and wedges can help maintain a consistent relationship between adjacent pieces. They do not replace correct adhesive application, full coverage, the required joint or movement detailing. The system still has to be installed according to the tile and adhesive manufacturer’s guidance.
The tools should support a good installation rather than hide a poor one.
A better sequence
Before a large-format tile is ordered, the walls and floor should be checked, the layout drawn, service penetrations coordinated and the required preparation allowed for. The installer can then use levelling equipment as part of a controlled fixing process.
The most expensive tile in the room cannot compensate for a substrate that was rushed. In a luxury bathroom, the preparation is part of the visible result because it determines how the surface catches light every day.
