Large porcelain slabs can give a bathroom the visual calm of a continuous stone surface with fewer joints. The design may be decided in a showroom, but the practical question begins at the property: can the slab safely reach the room?
The route is part of the specification
Before ordering a large slab, the team should consider the entrance, passages, corners, staircases, lift and door openings. Apartment buildings in Umhlanga, La Lucia and Durban North may also have body corporate rules, booking requirements or restricted delivery times.
The slab must be moved without damaging the material, the building or the people handling it. A route that looks wide enough on a plan may be difficult once protective packaging, turning space and the slab’s stiffness are considered.
Wall size is not the only measurement
The finished wall dimensions, service penetrations, niches, corners and intended joints all affect the cutting plan. The design team should decide where the slab begins and ends before the final piece is cut. A small change to a niche or mixer position can affect an entire elevation.
This is especially important when the slab has directional veining, bookmatch intentions or an image that needs to be visually centred.
Handling and fixing are specialist operations
Manufacturers and installation systems provide handling and fixing guidance for large-format porcelain. The substrate must be suitably flat, adhesive coverage must be controlled and the slab must be supported during movement and placement. The exact requirements depend on the product, thickness and application.
That is why a large slab should not be treated as simply a bigger ordinary tile.
The luxury result starts before delivery
The best time to discover that a slab cannot turn into the bathroom is before it is purchased. A site measure, access review, tile layout and service coordination protect both the design and the budget.
Large-format porcelain can be a superb choice for a Durban bathroom, but it rewards planning. The slab, the route, the substrate and the fabrication details have to be considered together.
