Large tiles do not hide an uneven wall
Large-format tiles are popular in high-end bathrooms because fewer joints can make a room feel quieter and more spacious. They also make substrate errors easier to see.
A large tile needs a suitably flat, stable surface. Trying to force a rigid tile onto a wall with hollows or sudden changes can create poor contact, lippage, cracked tiles or stressed adhesive. The preparation has to happen before the tile is opened, not while the tiler is trying to make it behave.
Tile choice and adhesive choice belong together
Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and mosaics do not all have the same properties. Water absorption, tile size, substrate, location and the manufacturer’s system recommendations affect adhesive selection.
The installer also needs to work within the adhesive’s open time, bed thickness and curing requirements. A tile being expensive does not make an unsuitable adhesive suitable.
Coverage and handling matter
Large tiles need careful lifting, positioning and checking. Depending on the system and tile, back-buttering may be part of achieving the required contact. The goal is not to create a decorative surface that looks level from across the room; it is to install the tile with appropriate support and coverage.
Corners, movement joints, changes of plane and perimeter gaps also need to be planned. Grout is not a substitute for a movement joint, and a rigid tile installation still has to accommodate the building and substrate conditions.
Why a luxury finish needs patience
Large-format work is unforgiving of rushed setting-out. The drain position, niche, vanity, mirror, lighting and shower glass should be considered before the first tile is fixed. A well-planned layout avoids narrow slivers and makes the key lines feel intentional.
In a Durban renovation, the final result depends on the room beneath the tile as much as the tile itself. The material creates the visual language, but the preparation creates the finish.
