Choosing a porcelain design is only half the decision. The finish changes how the surface reflects light, how it feels underfoot and how quickly water marks or fingerprints become visible.
Three finishes often appear in premium ranges: matt, polished and lappato. The names are not interchangeable.
Polished
Polished porcelain gives a strong reflection and can make a room feel brighter. It can suit a feature wall or a carefully selected bathroom floor, but the actual product application, wet-use information and maintenance requirements must be checked before it is specified in a shower or wet walking area.
Reflections can also reveal substrate irregularities and make cleaning marks more obvious under directional lighting.
Matt
Matt porcelain absorbs more light visually and often gives a softer, quieter surface. It can support a calm stone or concrete aesthetic and may be easier to live with where the room receives strong daylight. Texture and cleanability still vary between products; matt does not automatically mean slip-resistant or maintenance-free.
Lappato
Lappato sits between a fully matt and highly polished appearance. It has a partial sheen that can pick up highlights without producing the same level of reflection as a full polish. It is often attractive on marble-look or stone-look surfaces, but the product’s technical information should still be reviewed for each intended location.
See the finish in the room
A showroom sample cannot show every effect of a large wall, artificial lighting, wet footprints, grout colour and adjoining materials. A useful selection process considers the room’s light, the shower floor separately from the walls, the cleaning routine and whether the homeowner wants reflection or restraint.
The best finish is the one that supports the way the bathroom will actually be used. A premium surface should remain beautiful after the first week, not only on the day it is photographed.
