Coastal grade is not a magic phrase
A product described as coastal grade may have been designed for a more exposed environment, but the phrase does not tell you everything about its base metal, coating, test method, installation, cleaning or warranty.
Two products with the same sales label can have very different construction and care requirements.
Ask five practical questions
Before specifying a fitting for Umhlanga, Umdloti or the North Coast, ask:
- What is the actual base material?
- What is the surface finish or coating?
- What exposure does the manufacturer approve?
- What cleaning products and frequency are required?
- What does the warranty exclude, especially for colour and corrosion?
Also check the screws, brackets, hinges and other hidden components. A visible finish can survive while a concealed fastener fails.
Material selection should be specific
“Coastal” should describe the project exposure and the product evidence, not simply the address. A protected interior bathroom, a sea-facing apartment and an exterior shower need different levels of scrutiny.
The strongest coastal specification is precise about what is known and honest about what still needs manufacturer confirmation.
