The small ledge can be the difficult detail

Salt-laden moisture does not affect every bathroom surface in the same way. A horizontal ledge, tap base, drain cover, cabinet top or recessed shelf can hold droplets and deposits after the surrounding wall appears dry.

That does not mean every horizontal surface will fail. It means its shape, finish, access and cleaning method should be considered during design rather than after staining or corrosion appears.

Detail design affects maintenance

Avoid creating narrow pockets that cannot be reached with a soft cloth or fresh water. Coordinate falls and drainage so water is not left around a fitting. Where a metal edge, coating or mirror is selected, confirm how it should be cleaned and whether the warranty treats the decorative finish separately from the underlying product.

The most durable luxury bathroom is often the one where fewer details trap water. A simple, accessible ledge can be better than an elaborate recess that is impossible to dry.
