Glass is measured against the room you actually built
Frameless shower glass is often treated as the final decorative element of a bathroom. In reality, it depends on the accuracy of the finished floor, walls, tile lines, shower fall, door clearance and fixing points.
That is why a glass enclosure should generally be measured after the relevant finished surfaces are in place. A drawing made from rough dimensions cannot account reliably for every layer added during the renovation.
Small errors become visible in frameless work
Framed systems can hide some variation behind profiles. Frameless glass has fewer places to conceal it. A wall that is slightly out of plumb, a floor that falls differently from the drawing, or a tile edge that moves by a few millimetres can affect the door, seals and visual alignment.
The shower must also be checked for safe door movement and clearance from the basin, toilet, towel rail and other fittings. A door that technically fits may still be awkward to use if the wider bathroom layout was not considered.
Waterproofing comes before the hardware
Glass brackets and channels must not compromise the wet-area construction. The location of fixings, sealant joints and penetrations should be coordinated with the waterproofing system and the installer’s method.
Toughened safety glass cannot be drilled or cut after manufacture, so panel sizes and hardware positions need to be resolved before fabrication. The exact glass and hardware requirements should be confirmed with the specialist supplier.
Coastal care matters too
In Durban, Umhlanga and other coastal areas, the hardware deserves attention during product selection and maintenance. Moisture and salt-laden air can be hard on unsuitable metals and finishes. Gentle cleaning and drying help, but the product’s own care instructions remain the authority.
The cleanest frameless result is produced when waterproofing, tiling, drainage, glass and hardware are treated as one coordinated installation rather than separate appointments.
