Black shower hardware can give a bathroom a strong, graphic appearance. Near the Durban coast, the finish also needs an honest maintenance plan. Humidity, salt exposure, minerals, soap and unsuitable cleaning chemicals can all affect the appearance over time.
The finish is a product, not just a colour
Painted, plated, powder-coated and PVD finishes have different construction and care requirements. Two black products can look similar in a showroom while having different resistance and warranty conditions.
Water marks show on dark surfaces
A dark finish reveals dried droplets and mineral deposits quickly. The hardware should be wiped with a soft cloth and cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than scrubbed with an abrasive pad.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Strong acids, solvents and abrasive cleaners may damage the finish, seals or adjacent glass. The owner should receive a simple care instruction with the project handover.
Check the hidden components
The visible black trim is only one part of the system. Cartridges, concealed bodies, hinges, fixings and replacement components should be available and documented so a future repair does not require replacing an entire enclosure.
Use black where it can be maintained
Black hardware is a good choice when the household is comfortable wiping it down and using the correct products. It is not the lowest-maintenance finish by default, but it can remain excellent when specified and cared for properly.
