A small sample cannot show a full slab
Marble and other natural stone are geological materials. The colour, vein movement, fissures, translucent areas and repairs can change across the length of a slab.
For a premium bathroom, the physical slab should be inspected before the fabrication plan is finalised. A web image or small sample is useful for narrowing the style, but it is not a reliable substitute for the material that will be installed.
What to inspect
Look at the overall background, the direction of the main veins, natural fissures, filled areas, mesh or resin backing, edge condition, thickness, finish and usable dimensions. For onyx or other translucent stone, test the actual slab with the intended light.
Also consider whether enough matching material is available for the vanity, shower wall, shelf, bath panel or threshold. A single hero slab may not be enough for the complete design.
Reserve the material and record the details
Once the client approves the slab, record the supplier, slab or bundle reference, photographs and agreed finish. Current catalogue listings do not guarantee that the same material will still be available later.
The fabricator then needs final measurements and a cut map showing where the visible pieces will land. This is especially important for book-matching and strong movement.
The supplier and installer have different roles
A slab yard can present the material and range. The fabricator turns it into the required pieces. The bathroom renovator coordinates those pieces with waterproofing, plumbing, cabinetry, glass and the final room.
