A smell is a symptom, not a diagnosis

A bathroom drain that smells or a shower that holds water is telling you that something needs investigation. The cause may be a trap problem, poor drainage, a blocked or restricted waste, an incorrect connection, or water remaining where the design does not allow it to escape properly.

Spraying cleaner down the drain may temporarily change the smell without solving the underlying issue.

Check the whole route from surface to waste

In a shower, the finished fall directs water to the waste. The waste must be installed correctly, remain accessible where required, and connect to a suitable drainage route. A beautiful linear drain cannot compensate for an unsuitable pipe route or a fall that does not work.

The trap and waste connection also matter. If the trap is dry, incorrectly installed or losing its water seal, odours may enter the room. If the water drains slowly, there may be a restriction or a design limitation that should be assessed rather than covered with more sealant.

Walk-in showers need more than a glass screen

A walk-in shower has to manage water through its falls, shower flow, screen position, floor levels and drainage capacity. A high-flow rain shower can expose a weakness that was not obvious with a small hand shower.

The threshold-free look depends entirely on where the water is planned to go. The finished floor height, waterproofing details and adjacent bathroom floor all need to be considered together.

Durban conditions can make moisture more persistent

Humidity can slow evaporation and make damp smells more noticeable, but humidity does not explain every drainage problem. Ventilation, cleaning and drying help with the room’s moisture load; they do not repair an incorrectly connected waste or failed trap.

Before replacing a drain or resealing a shower, establish whether the problem is with the surface, the waste, the trap, the pipe route or the room’s ventilation. That is the difference between treating a symptom and solving the bathroom.
