A toilet is connected to the building, not just the showroom
Two toilets can look almost identical while requiring different waste arrangements. Before selecting a pan, the existing set-out, waste direction, finished wall position and water connection need to be understood.
An S-trap generally connects through the floor, while a P-trap connects through the wall or a suitable rear outlet arrangement. The exact pan and installation method must be checked against the manufacturer’s dimensions.
Finished levels change the result
The position is measured from the finished floor and finished wall, not from a rough slab or unfinished plaster. Screed, waterproofing, adhesive, tile and wall build-up all affect the final relationship between the pan, flush plate, waste and seat height.
A small planning error can leave the toilet too close to a wall, misalign the flush plate, or require an awkward connection hidden behind the finished room.
Back-to-wall and wall-hung are different installations
A back-to-wall pan conceals the cistern or pipework behind the pan, but still needs compatible waste alignment and service access. A wall-hung pan depends on a suitable frame and support structure, finished wall thickness and a tested concealed cistern system.
Before closing the wall, flush operation, water connections, waste alignment and access through the flush plate should be checked. The exact frame and pan combination should be compatible rather than assembled from visually similar parts.
Start with the waste route
In a premium bathroom, the pan should be chosen after the room’s service constraints are understood. The visible shape is important, but the hidden connection determines whether the installation is practical.
