A hard tile still has a vulnerable edge
Porcelain is popular in premium bathrooms because it is dense, durable and available in convincing stone and concrete effects. Its hardness also means that a normal masonry bit is not automatically suitable for every hole.
Drilling for a shower fitting, basin accessory, mirror, toilet button or glass bracket should be planned around the exact position and hardware. A cracked tile is not simply a small cosmetic defect when it is part of a waterproofed wall or a carefully aligned large-format layout.
Mark the location before the tile is fixed
The hole position should be checked against the plumbing, backing, waterproofing detail and fitting dimensions. Drilling through a concealed pipe or cable is a serious error, so the location should be known rather than estimated from the visible trim.
The tile layout also matters. A hole close to an edge, corner or cut-out has a different risk profile from a hole in the middle of a tile. Setting out should avoid forcing an accessory into an awkward or unsupported position.
Use the correct method for the tile and fitting
The appropriate diamond tool, cooling method, speed and pressure depend on the tile and hole size. The tile supplier or manufacturer’s guidance should be followed. The process should be controlled rather than rushed: excessive heat, pressure or vibration can damage the tile or its edges.
After drilling, the fitting should not load the tile in a way that creates a crack. Fixings and sealant need to suit the substrate, the wet-area detail and the product being installed.
Make the hole part of the waterproofing detail
A hole through a wet-area tile is also a penetration through the finished surface. The waterproofing system beneath it should remain protected, and the fitting should be sealed according to the relevant installation method. Silicone around a damaged or poorly prepared hole is not a replacement for good construction.
Premium tile work is measured in the small details. Accurate setting out protects the tile, the waterproofing and the finished alignment of the room.
