Renovation walls carry history
An older Durban bathroom may have walls that bow, lean or change direction between floor and ceiling. Previous tiles, plaster repairs and alterations can make a nominally straight wall difficult to use as a reliable cabinet datum.
Custom cabinetry should respond to that condition rather than pretending it does not exist.
What a scribe does
A scribe panel or controlled filler allows the cabinet to meet an imperfect wall while keeping the main doors and drawers square. A shadow gap can make the junction intentional where the design suits it.
These details are not a way to excuse poor measurement. They are tools for making a carefully measured cabinet fit a real building.
Silicone is not a cabinet design
A large, uneven bead of sealant may close a gap temporarily, but it rarely produces the crisp finish expected from premium joinery. It can also make future removal and maintenance more difficult.
The correct detail depends on the wall, cabinet material, countertop, tile and moisture exposure. It should be decided before fabrication, not improvised when the unit is pushed into place.
Fit the furniture to the building
The best custom vanity is not the one designed in isolation. It is the one measured against the finished room, coordinated with the tile and mirror lines and installed with enough tolerance to remain serviceable.
